Day One - Watch the ball

Session Logistics: Saturday (9/29/2012) at 12:15pm at the Stonebridge community tennis court. The coach was Daniel. 

Summary of lesson
Keep eye on the ball. Move around the court by jumping (not running). Hold the racket such that it feels like an extension of the hand.

Lesson Details
  1. Bounce the ball and walk along the side line. Keep eye on the ball. (11 Repetitions)
  2. Throw ball in the air while walking along the side line. Keep eye on the ball. (11 Repetitions)
  3. Coach throws the ball over the net (on each side). Catch the ball after one bounce with both hands. Alternate from one side to the other. (7 Repetitions)
  4. Coach throws the ball up in the air, over the net (on each side). Catch the ball before it bounces with both hands. Alternate from one side to the other. (7 Repetitions)
  5. Using racket hit the ball back over the net while standing close to the net. Slow hitting to ensure the ball gets back to the other side. Alternate from side to side (7 repetitions)
  6. Using racket stand farther away from the net. Hit the ball back over the net using full upper body swing. (7 repetitions)
  7. Using racket move from left side of court to right side of court after hitting the ball. Do not take eye off the ball.
  8. Lesson ends.
Lesson Notes
  • Warm up before playing, by stretching.
  • Always keep eyes on the ball.
  • Jump and move around the court. Do not run around the court.
  • Keep knees bent. This is the ready position.
  • Hold the racket such that the seam of the racket is between the thumb and for finger. Racket should feel like an extension of the hand.
  • Racket should not swing in the hand.
  • Wrist should not bend when hitting the ball.
  • Buy tennis shoes from R and J Sports in Rockville.
  • Bend knees slightly when hitting the ball, this helps in getting the ball over the net.
  • Take water to the court.
